How to Play 2048

2048 is a highly addictive number puzzle game created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in 2014. The game is played on a 4×4 grid where you combine matching numbered tiles to reach the coveted 2048 tile. Simple to learn but difficult to master, 2048 has become one of the most popular puzzle games in the world.

On MIA Games, you control the movement of all tiles on the board. Use your arrow keys or swipe gestures to slide tiles in four directions: up, down, left, and right. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with the combined value, and you earn points equal to the new tile's value.

Game Rules

The game starts with two tiles (either 2 or 4) randomly placed on the grid. Each move shifts all tiles in the chosen direction as far as possible. After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty cell. The game continues until:

  • You create a tile with the value 2048 (you win!)
  • There are no empty cells and no adjacent tiles can be merged (game over)
  • You press New Game to restart

Your current score tracks the total value of all merged tiles. The best score is saved locally in your browser using localStorage, so it persists between sessions.

Strategy Guide

These strategies will help you reach 2048 more consistently:

  • Keep your highest tile in a corner. The corner position is the safest place for your largest tile. It only needs to be protected from two directions instead of three.
  • Build a chain of descending values. Arrange your tiles so that values decrease from the corner outward. This creates natural merge opportunities.
  • Don't move your highest tile. Once you have a high-value tile in a corner, try to keep it there. Moving it can break your carefully arranged pattern.
  • Plan several moves ahead. Think about where each tile will go before you make a move. One wrong move can fill your board with unmatchable tiles.
  • Use the undo feature. If you make a mistake, use the Undo button to go back one move and try a different approach.

A Brief History of 2048

2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli as a web-based game in just two days. The game was inspired by two similar titles: 1024 by Veewo Studio and Threes by Asher Vollmer. Cirulli's version, however, became a global phenomenon, with over 100 million players within the first year of release. The game's simple mechanics and deep strategy have made it a timeless classic in the puzzle game genre.
