How to Play Hangman

Hangman is one of the most widely played word-guessing games in the world, enjoyed in classrooms, on paper, and in digital form for well over a century. The premise is simple: a secret word is chosen and represented by a row of blank spaces — one blank per letter. You guess letters one at a time. Every correct guess reveals that letter in all its positions within the word. Every wrong guess adds a new part to the hangman drawing. Guess the complete word before the drawing is finished to win.

Game Rules

On MIA Games Hangman, the hidden word is displayed as a row of blank dashes, one per letter. Click or tap any letter on the on-screen keyboard, or press any letter key on your physical keyboard, to make a guess. If the letter appears in the word, all positions where that letter occurs are revealed immediately. If the letter is not in the word, it counts as a wrong guess and one part of the hangman figure is drawn. You have six lives — six wrong guesses before the game ends.

  • Correctly guessed letters are revealed in all their positions simultaneously
  • Wrong guesses are shown in the "Wrong guesses" area below the word
  • Each letter can only be guessed once per round
  • Guessing the last missing letter completes the word and wins the round
  • Six wrong guesses completes the hangman figure and ends the game

Word Categories

MIA Games Hangman includes six themed word categories plus a Random mode that picks from all categories combined. If you want a sense of how varied our word lists are, our sister game Word Search follows a similar themed-category approach — and for a broader look at why themed word games help with vocabulary, see our article on why Hangman is more than just a word game.

  • 🐾 Animals — from common pets to exotic wildlife worldwide
  • 🌍 Countries — nation names from every continent
  • 🍔 Food — dishes, ingredients, and cuisines from around the world
  • ⚽ Sports — sports, games, and athletic disciplines
  • 💻 Technology — computing, internet, and digital concepts
  • 🌿 Nature — plants, weather, landforms, and natural phenomena
  • 🎲 Random — mixes every category for the ultimate variety

The word list contains 474 unique words spread across all categories. A no-repeat dealing system makes sure every round shows you a word you have not seen yet in that category and difficulty — the deck only reshuffles once you have worked through every available word.

Difficulty Levels

Three difficulty bands adjust the challenge without changing the rules. Casual deals shorter words of up to six letters, ideal for warming up or younger players. Classic uses the full word bank, exactly as Hangman has always been played. Challenge deals only longer words of eight letters or more, where every guess has to earn its place. The difficulty selector sits next to the category selector, so you can change the challenge level between rounds at any time.

The Hint System

Each round starts with three hints. Pressing the Hint button automatically reveals one random letter that has not yet been guessed. Using a hint does not cost you a life, but each hint used reduces the round's score. Hints are best saved for when you have narrowed the word down to a few possibilities but cannot commit to the next letter.

Scoring & Word Mastery

Every win earns points: 10 points per unique letter in the word, 15 bonus points per life remaining, plus a difficulty bonus — 25 for Classic and 60 for Challenge — minus 20 points for each hint used. Your total score, best score, wins, losses, and streaks are saved locally in your browser.

The Word Mastery meter tracks how many of the 474 words you have solved at least once. Solving a new word fills the meter a little further, giving long-term players a completion goal beyond any single round — a reason to try every category and difficulty.

Winning Strategy Tips

  • Start with high-frequency vowels. E, A, I, O, and U appear in nearly every common word.
  • Follow with high-frequency consonants. T, N, S, R, and L are the most common consonants.
  • Pay attention to word length. Short words (3–4 letters) are often trickier.
  • Use the category as context. It helps eliminate unlikely letters.
  • Save hints for consonant clusters. They're harder to guess than vowels.

Educational Benefits of Hangman

Beyond being a fun pastime, Hangman offers several educational benefits that make it a favourite among teachers and language learners worldwide:

  • Vocabulary Expansion: Players are exposed to new words in context, helping them learn spelling and meaning simultaneously.
  • Letter Recognition: For young learners, the game reinforces letter identification and phonetic awareness.
  • Pattern Recognition: As players identify common letter combinations, they develop pattern recognition skills that transfer to reading and writing.
  • Strategic Thinking: Choosing which letter to guess next requires logical reasoning and probability estimation.
  • Memory Retention: The active recall process strengthens memory of word spellings and common letter patterns.

Tips for Parents and Teachers

If you're using Hangman as a learning tool, here are some strategies to maximise the educational value:

  • Start with the Food category: Younger players often find food-related words more familiar and accessible.
  • Encourage verbalisation: Ask students to say each letter aloud as they guess, reinforcing auditory learning.
  • Review wrong guesses: After the game, review incorrect guesses to help students understand why certain letters are less likely to appear in specific word patterns.
  • Use the category as a teaching tool: Discuss the category before starting — e.g., "What are some animals we might see in this game?"
  • Set challenges: Challenge students to guess the word with minimal hints or within a time limit for added engagement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lives do I get in Hangman?

You get six lives, each representing one wrong guess. After six incorrect guesses, the game ends and the full word is revealed.

Can I play Hangman with a keyboard?

Yes! You can use your physical keyboard to guess letters. Simply press any letter key (A–Z) to make a guess. This makes the game faster and more accessible for touch-typists.

How many words are in the game?

The game includes 474 unique words across six categories plus Random mode, and a no-repeat system means you will not see the same word twice in a category until you have worked through them all.

What happens when I use a hint?

The hint button reveals one random unguessed letter in the word. It costs one of your three hint tokens but does not affect your lives or streak. Each hint used does reduce your score for the round, so hints are a trade-off.

How does scoring work?

A win earns 10 points per unique letter, 15 points per life remaining, plus a difficulty bonus (25 for Classic, 60 for Challenge), minus 20 points per hint used. Solving with all six lives intact on Challenge difficulty earns the highest scores.

What is Word Mastery?

Word Mastery tracks the percentage of the 474 words you have solved at least once. It is a long-term completion goal: play every category and difficulty to push the meter toward 100%.

Is Hangman free to play?

Yes, completely free. MIA Games Hangman is supported by non-intrusive advertisements that never interrupt gameplay.

Can I play Hangman on mobile?

Absolutely. The game is fully responsive and works on any device — smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktops. Touch, mouse, and keyboard inputs are all supported.

Does the game save my progress?

Your wins, losses, best streak, score, best score, and word-mastery progress are saved in your browser's localStorage. Your data never leaves your device and is not shared with anyone.

A Brief History of Hangman

Hangman is believed to have originated in Victorian England, with the earliest known written reference appearing in a book of children's games published in 1894 by Alice Gomme, where it was described under the name "Birds, Beasts, and Fishes." The game spread through English-speaking countries throughout the 20th century as a popular classroom activity for vocabulary building, requiring no equipment beyond pencil and paper.
