How to Play Classic Stack

Classic Stack is a timeless puzzle game that challenges your reflexes, spatial awareness, and strategic thinking. The concept is simple: falling blocks, each made of four squares (tetrominoes), descend from the top of the playfield. Your goal is to rotate and position these blocks to form complete horizontal lines, which then disappear, earning you points and making room for more blocks.

Game Rules

The game ends when blocks stack to the top of the playfield. Here's how to play:

  • Move Left/Right: Use the ← and → arrow keys or swipe on touch devices
  • Rotate: Press ↑ or tap the rotate button to spin the current block
  • Soft Drop: Press ↓ to speed up the block's descent
  • Hard Drop: Press Space to instantly drop the block to the bottom
  • Hold: Press H or tap the hold button to store the current piece for later use

Scoring

  • Formula: (Lines cleared) × 100 × (Current level)
  • 1 Line at Level 1: 1 × 100 × 1 = 100 points
  • 4 Lines at Level 1: 4 × 100 × 1 = 400 points
  • 1 Line at Level 2: 1 × 100 × 2 = 200 points
  • Hard Drop: 2 points per cell dropped

Levels & Speed

Each level increases the game speed, making blocks fall faster. You advance a level every 10 lines cleared. The game speed caps at level 15, after which the speed remains constant.

History of Falling Block Games

The falling block puzzle genre was created in 1984 by Alexey Pajitnov, a Russian computer scientist. Since then, it has become one of the most recognized and beloved puzzle games in history, with over 500 million copies sold across all platforms. Classic Stack continues this tradition by bringing the classic falling block puzzle experience to your browser.
